Dave Bautista plays the character of Eddie in ‘The Last Showgirl’. It was very surprising to see him in such a small film and in such a small role. He’s a retired WWE fighter. A strong heavyweight. That’s the type of characters he usually plays. But he took on the role because he wasn’t happy where he was in his career. This is what came to him when he spoke to his agent, as per what he said himself during the movie’s Q&A at TIFF, where the movie premiered. This drastic change in pace made me think a lot about men like Eddie – manipulative, cowardly, and weak in the knees – why women are down to them, what they represent, and the long-lasting effects they have on women’s lives – the good, the bad, and the very, very ugly. ‘The Last Showgirl’ is a beautiful movie that really showcased the constant battle a woman faces to be seen as good enough, no matter the age or what phase in her life she’s in. Pamela Anderson’s character, Shelley, makes an entire speech about it to a man that couldn’t give a f*ck about it at all when she’s turned down during an audition. We learn a lot about Shelley throughout the movie and how her life turned out the way that it did. We learn that she didn’t necessarily choose for her life to turn out the way that it did. This, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis’ recent podcast interview with Kevin Hart, made me think a lot about the harsh truths of a woman’s battle to be seen as good enough. Let’s discuss…

Jamie Lee Curtis has had a massively successful year. In 2023, she won her first Oscar for ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. Most recently, she won her first Emmy for her guest-appearance in ‘The Bear.’ Somewhere in between these two milestones, she finished filming ‘Freakier Friday’ with Lindsay Lohan, and she made an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival for her film, ‘The Last Showgirl’. I had the massive privilege to attend the premiere of the film on September 6th. Watching the movie and getting to see the Q&A thereafter, got me thinking a lot about whether or not it’s actually a key to success to be a nepo-baby, in Hollywood and otherwise, coming from the OG nepo-baby herself, Jamie Lee Curtis. Katy Perry has been making headlines recently, and not in a good way. Aside from supporting her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, at TIFF, she has a brand new single out, as well as an entire new album, her first since 2020, to go with it. Neither of these received a warm welcome from Perry’s fans. First, the lead single, ‘Woman’s World’, was written by a bunch of men. And second, both the single and the album were produced by the disgraced Dr. Luke, who’d been accused of drugging and raping Kesha in 2005. This made me think and reflect a lot about being friends with someone who associates themselves with an abuser, and what it does to a survivor’s psyche. Let’s discuss…

It’s been a busy time for Camila Mendes since her stint on ‘Riverdale’ ended. She’s since starred in movies like ‘Do Revenge’, ‘Uploaded’, and ‘Música’. I watched all three, and I can honestly say that all three were good. They had their own sense of charm. But it’s her roles in ‘Uploaded’ and ‘Música’, and the drastic differences in the characters and how they handled themselves in their relationships with not the strongest of men that really caught my eye. They both represent the drastic differences in how strong women can become emotionally invested in weak men, and how that can affect them in the long run. There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the drastic differences in how Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have been promoting their movie, ‘It Ends With Us’. Lively, on her part, is promoting it as a romantic comedy and maintains that her character, Lily Bloom, isn’t defined by the domestic abuse she’d endured at the hands of Ryle, played by Baldoni. Her take on Lily hasn’t been received well by the public, specifically by those who are domestic violence survivors. But is she ACTUALLY wrong to say all this? And if so, how should she have promoted the movie instead? Let’s discuss…
