I don’t think there’s ever a time where a Kaardashian, particularly Kim, isn’t in the news. It’s especially true since Kim Kardashian divorced Kanye West and started dating Pete Davidson. This love triangle and messy situation is going to be a whole other blog post in itself. Right now, though, I want to talk about Kim Kardashian’s ‘best advice’ for women in business. In a joint interview with her mother, Kris Jenner, and her sisters, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, Kim said, ‘Get off your f*cking ass and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days. Her sister, Kourtney agreed with her, which seemed odd and hypocritical since she always stated when she filmed ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ that work wasn’t a priority for her.
Many people in the entertainment industry had a lot to say about this matter, including ‘The Good Place’ star, Jameela Jamil, and the hosts of ‘The View’. What surprised me, was the reaction that Meghan McCain had to the tone-deaf advice that Kim had for women in business. McCain, who just like the Kardashian-Jenner sisters, comes from a family of wealth and privilege, had this to say:
“The pandemic, lockdowns and everything that went along with them directly impacted women in the workplace, because many were pulled out of their professions to carry the load of caregiving responsibilities at home.”
The conservative columnist also pointed out that Kim “was born into privilege,” noting that the reality star was “born to a famous father,” “her mother was close friends with celebrities as Kim was growing up,” “her step-father is a wealthy former Olympian,” and how “one of her first jobs was as Paris Hilton’s assistant.”
“She didn’t pull herself up by her bootstraps — as they say,” Meghan wrote, adding that Kim “has been afforded more opportunities than the average person can ever dream of.” She continued, “While she may work hard, less than 99.9% percent of the world’s population will ever be given the opportunities that Kim has had.”
The former “View” co-host said that Kim’s comments “also play into the archaic belief that some women’s careers stall because of their actions,” saying the “dated thinking assumes that these women aren’t working hard or ‘leaning in enough.'”
Meghan added, “Lastly, Kim’s remarks ignore that inflation is skyrocketing, gas prices are hitting historic highs, society has been savaged by Covid and the world appears to be on the verge of a possible WWIII.”
The TV personality went on to end her post by sharing some words for Kim, writing, “I would advise Kim to try and continue growing and morphing with the times I would encourage her to be humble and self-aware enough to realize that she is the embodiment of the one percent of the one percent.”
“You didn’t simply get there from hard work alone,” Meghan, the daughter of the late John McCain concluded. “Trust me, as someone who has benefitted from opportunities — given to me in the same way they were given to Kim — I know what I am talking about.”
Kim then proceeded to talk about how no one should be around toxicity, but rather a good, positive working environment. When a former employee of the Kardashian family, Jessica DeFino, took notice of the interview, she quickly took to her Twitter account to tell us all about what it was like to work for them. She said she worked overtime, she was underpaid to the point that she couldn’t afford gas money, and she got in trouble for having freelance gigs on the side.
I’m in no way saying that Kim Kardashian doesn’t work hard. She’s busted her ass off for the past 15 years. She doesn’t realize, however, just how privileged she really is. I, for one, believe that each and every woman out there works hard. It doesn’t matter if she’s a 9-5 employee, a businesswoman, or a housewife. She just works hard. In this particular case, Kim was talking to women in business, so we’ll go with that motto. Kim doesn’t realize that she got her start by having the right connections in her corner. Just like McCain said, her father was O.J Simpson’s lawyer, her step-father is a former olympian, and she was Paris Hilton’s best assistant. But let’s also not forget that her mother is her manager who saw an opportunity in Kim’s sex tape; not only for Kim, but for the rest of the family.
Most of us, businesswomen, work hard. We work our asses off until we forget to sleep. That’s how I was when I first started blogging in 2012 and then when I began my career path as a freelance writer. But then, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Everything changed since then. I couldn’t do what I was normally doing if I wanted to live a healthy life and be able to work. There was a time where I physically couldn’t work for 6 months straight due to my newfound chronic illness. If I did work, I’d lose clients left and right because I couldn’t bring 100% quality work. Then once I started gaining a positive reputation and gaining more serious clients acquiring more serious projects, the pandemic hit and all was cancelled. My business closed. If you want to read more about epilepsy, you can do so by clicking here. By knowing all this, does this mean that I don’t bust my ass off while I work on my business? Yes – that is if I listen to anything Kim Kardashian has to say. In reality, though, I DO bust my ass off. But I have my limitations to what I can do per day. Life also happened and things happened that were absolutely out of my control. My parents are also not celebrities and don’t have the connections that Kim Kardashian has/had to get my career going and noticed. So maybe Kim Kardashian is telling me I should get different parents too?
Each and every woman has a different 24 hours, and that’s totally okay. What’s most important is that we do our best and that we tell ourselves that each and every day, no matter what our life situations might be. It’s also important that we all support one another. Entrepreneurship is such a male oriented industry. Therefore, we, as women, need to have each other’s backs. That’s one of the many reasons why I created this blog – to support, inspire, and connect with one another. It’s thanks to this very blog and the many guest bloggers who’ve been a part of my journey that I learned so much about different women from all walks of life and all that they endure.
In the same interview with Variety, Khloe Kardashian said, ‘If you’re the smartest person in the room, you want to go to a different room. I want to be around successful people, because that’s gonna drive me me to be successful.’ That’s one positive thing I’ll take away from that interview.
